Another interesting round of Champions League action is in the books. Hence, it is time to revisit my predictions. I clearly fell for Jose Mourinho when he said this was the best CSKA Moscow team he had ever faced. It’s also clear, that Group G is going to prove tricky for a lot of people to predict. Time to tally up.
Sevilla vs Maribor Pick 3-0, Result 3-0
Starting off with a bang! This pick was never in doubt. Even Liverpool should beat this lot from Maribor. Then again …
Spartak Moscow vs Liverpool Pick 1-3, Result 1-1
Liverpool do realize they are no trophies awarded for most shots in a match, right? Right? Maybe not.
City vs Shakhtar Donetsk Pick 3-1, Result 2-0
This actually turned out to be quite an underrated match. For some excellent tactical analysis of this game, please read Gabriele Marcotti’s fantastic piece.
Napoli vs Feyenoord Pick 4-1, Result 3-1
Napoli had the chances to make my prediction an eventuality. Always knew they would concede though. Even if it took comedic defending in injury time to make it happen.
Besiktas vs RB Leipzig Pick 1-1, Result 2-0
Veterans Ryan Babel and Ricardo Quaresma were delightful in the first half. Leipzig on the other hand were deers in the headlights in the first half.
Monaco vs Porto Pick 2-1, Result 0-3
The rematch of the 2004 Champions League final was an interesting game. I just didn’t expect to see the exact same scoreline.
APOEL Nicosia vs Tottenham Pick 1-2, Result 0-3
The Cypriot Champions were actually quite good for the first half an hour and really should have scored. Then Harry Kane scored. The rest is history.
Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid Pick 3-2, Result 1-3
Annoyed at myself about this one. I saw this coming for Dortmund at Spurs and I should have seen it coming at home as well. Bale and Ronaldo were at their best and that defence for the Merengues isn’t too shabby either.
Basel vs Benfica Pick 1-2, Result 5-0
Ok, I know Benfica haven’t started the season well, but 5-0? To a team that is 4th in the Swiss League? The Swiss League??? Love the atmosphere at St. Jakob-Park though.
CSKA Moscow vs United Pick 1-1, Result 1-4
United were brutal. Just brutal. Can we have Martial start all the time please? At least CSKA had a teenager score for the second successive game.
Anderlecht vs Celtic Pick 1-2, Result 0-3
I always thought Celtic had it in them to win this one. However, I didn’t think they would exude such authority. Kudos to Brendan Rodgers and his men.
PSG vs Bayern Munich Pick 2-2, Result 3-0
Boy, Bayern were bad. Really average. In truth, I don’t think PSG were fantastic either. They didn’t need to be. Mbappe however, was simply phenomenal.
Qarabag vs Roma Pick 1-3, Result 1-2
After 15 minutes it looked like this was going to be ugly. Then Roma started being Roma and they ended up hanging on. Fantastic atmosphere in Baku for this one.
Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea Pick 1-0, Result 1-2
A simply sublime performance by Chelsea. One of the best displays away from home that I have seen in the Champions League in quite some time. If Conte always plays Fabregas, Hazard, Bakayako and Kante, Chelsea will be incredibly tough to beat.
Juventus vs Olympiacos Pick 3-0, Result 2-0
I was only one goal short in this one, but in truth, even the two-goal margin of victory flattered the Bianconeri.
Sporting vs Barcelona Pick 2-2, Result 0-1
Defeat was very harsh on Sporting. Jorge Jesus setup the home side perfectly. It’s not often that both Messi and Suarez are neutralized so effectively.
Once again, the Champions League proves that it has quality in abundance and thus, remains a very hard competition to predict. Of the 16 fixtures, I was able to predict seven results accurately but only one correct score. That gives me a total of nine points. Which is four below my first tally of 13 on Matchday 1. Certainly got some catching up to do for next time!
